Cientifico Latino Graduate Student Mentorship Initiative (GSMI)

Cientifico Latino is an organization aimed at promoting an environment of inclusivity in STEM and increase the number of scientists from minoritized backgrounds in higher education in the sciences through mentorship,
open-access resources, and professional development opportunities.

This mentorship program is slightly different from their GSEC program that is for incoming first year graduate students. The GSMI program is for students working towards applying for graduate school. The mentees will be paired with a STEM professional to help navigate the application process and prepare all the necessary documents.

Since they started this mentorship in 2019, they have helped a total of 450 students (generally around 70-80% of each year’s cohort) receive acceptances into STEM graduate school programs, including Master’s and PhD programs. During their 2nd year, I was a mentor for one of the students and would recommend this mentorship to anyone applying to graduate school.

As a student applying, you will be matched with a mentor. You will receive help with graduate school preparation material, one-on-one guidance from a mentor in your STEM field, financial assistance in the form of fee waivers, feedback on written materials, access to webinars, mock interviews, and access to a broader community of peers and mentors.

You can apply to be a mentee for this program if you are applying to graduate school. Alternatively, if you are a STEM professional, you can apply to be a mentor for students applying.

All applications close on June 15th.
