{"id":472,"date":"2023-05-11T16:57:55","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T16:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/navigatingstem.com\/?p=472"},"modified":"2023-05-11T16:58:46","modified_gmt":"2023-05-11T16:58:46","slug":"cientifico-latino-graduate-student-mentorship-initiative-gsmi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/navigatingstem.com\/index.php\/2023\/05\/11\/cientifico-latino-graduate-student-mentorship-initiative-gsmi\/","title":{"rendered":"Cientifico Latino Graduate Student Mentorship Initiative (GSMI)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cientificolatino.com\/\" title=\"Cientifico Latino\">Cientifico Latino<\/a> is an organization aimed at promoting an environment of inclusivity in STEM and increase the number of scientists from minoritized backgrounds in higher education in the sciences through mentorship,<br>open-access resources, and professional development opportunities.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This mentorship program is slightly different from their <a href=\"http:\/\/navigatingstem.com\/index.php\/2023\/05\/11\/cientifico-latinos-graduate-school-engagement-and-community-gsec\/\" title=\"GSEC program\">GSEC program<\/a> that is for incoming first year graduate students. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cientificolatino.com\/gsmi\" title=\"The GSMI program\">The GSMI program<\/a> is for students working towards applying for graduate school. The mentees will be paired with a STEM professional to help navigate the application process and prepare all the necessary documents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since they started this mentorship in 2019, they have helped\u00a0<strong>a total of 450 students<\/strong>\u00a0(generally around 70-80% of each year&#8217;s cohort) receive acceptances into STEM graduate school programs, including Master&#8217;s and PhD programs. During their 2nd year, I was a mentor for one of the students and would recommend this mentorship to anyone applying to graduate school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a student applying, you will be matched with a mentor. You will receive help with\u00a0graduate school preparation material, one-on-one guidance from a mentor in your STEM field, financial assistance in the form of fee waivers, feedback on written materials, access to webinars, mock interviews, and access to a broader community of peers and mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> You can apply to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdMyRdqtCpadMdWEokGHad0abT0yqtyokaZEei1TbR9RLs_CA\/viewform\" title=\"mentee\">mentee<\/a> for this program if you are applying to graduate school.
